'A passion going back to the age of 7'

Inspired by his father, Carsten Schael discovered his passion for photography at the age of 7. In the following years he developed into an enthusiastic amateur photographer which eventually let him to pursue a formal photographic training in the mid 1980s. Switching his hometown of Hamburg/Germany for Hong Kong in 1991, he started his own studio and a successful career in commercial photography.

His continued passion for the creation of outstanding images led to a number of exhibitions and awards. In his pursuit of excellence in imaging, he is always keen to explore the latest of technologies. Therefore it was only natural to work with the new Hasselblad H2 39 Megapixel digital back when his client, the Hong Kong Society for the Blind (HKSB), was looking for very high-resolution images for their poster fundraising campaign (see first 4 images).

Carsten describes how the theme for the shoot was developed: "In preparation for the shoot, we were touring the HKSB headquarter to gather knowledge about their comprehensive services. What surprised us, was the very positive attitude of many of their clients, despite their affliction with severe loss of sight or blindness. Clearly this was the result of the amazing support and care they received at the HKSB. This positive spirit became the theme for my photo shoot by portraying people's joy and happiness."
